The following resources were created with the support of the USDA National Institute of Food and Education grant.

In partnership with HEART, Earth Charter Indiana’s Food and Climate Unit allows both teachers and non-traditional educators to dive deeply into the interconnections between our food system and climate change.  This unit covers:

  • climate change basics

  • carbon footprint

  • food system analysis

  • Sustainable alternatives

  • Food and human health

It also is designed to inspire critical thinking, allowing students the autonomy to create a just and sustainable food system as well as a sustainable food pyramid/plate.

This unit is designed to be a “grab and go” tool for busy educators requiring very little preparation or background knowledge and is both interactive and hands-on.  Participants will walk away with not only a multi-faceted understanding of the problem but also with tangible ways of impacting the food system in their own communities.

Educators can choose to use the traditional Food and Climate Unit as a full group learning model or the Food and Climate Workbook which will allow learners to progress through the same content at their own pace.

This slide-sized PDF guide can be projected onto a screen or printed. The guide features 50+ pages of discussion starters and hands-on activities for students, as well as links, guiding questions, and charts. There are activities for all grade levels, and most can be adjusted to fit the needs of your students. Standards are also available for each activity.

This full-color workbook can be used independently by students (or in small groups) or as a companion to our Food and Climate Guide. More than 50 pages of activities include clickable links and QR codes allowing students to easily access a wide variety of materials and resources. The workbook can be printed for each student or used and saved on their own devices.
